Idris Davies (6 January - 6 April ), was a Welsh poet, best known for the poem "Bells of Rhymney," which was later set to music. Davies originally wrote in Welsh, but later wrote exclusively in English. He was the only poet to cover significant events in the early 20th century in the South Wales Valleys and the South Wales coalfield, and from a perspective literally at the coalface.   Idris Davies himself left school at the age of fourteen to become a miner and it was the strike of that forced him to look elsewhere for work. He is perhaps the most authentic socialist poet of the inter-war years to write in English, because he speaks out of the experience of his own working-class : Idris Davies.

The celebrated Welsh poet Idris Davies (–) was born in Rhymney. After leaving school at the age of 14 he worked as a miner in the nearby Abertysswg and Rhymney Mardy Pits. After participating in the failed General Strike of , Davies moved to London . Through the voices of ordinary people caught up in the struggle, The Angry Summer graphically illustrates the plight of the miners and their families during the six-month-long miners' strike of - 'the summer of soups and speeches'. Idris Davies himself left school at the age of fourteen to become a miner and it was the strike of that.

Brand new Book. For many, Idris Davies was the archetypal poet of the Welsh valleys, the poet of protest and passion. Though having the appeal of modern folksong, his work is also richly layered. It champions the ideals of a people struggling to come to terms with the great economic and religious changes of the first half of the twentieth century.

Enjoyed this book of poems. I know little of Idris Davies, but his poems Idris Davies book delight. His irreverent views on religion and preachers are a joy to read. For anybody who knows the welsh valleys and their people these poems will strike a cord.
